Introduction to Parallels:

Parallels Desktop for Mac is a Virtual Machine that gives Apple users the ability to run Windows or any other operating system and their critical applications at the same time as Mac OS X on any Intel-powered Mac.

Since Tourwriter is a Windows based application which requires Windows OS, Parallels allows Windows to be installed on Mac. With Parallels installed, it is possible to run Mac and Windows applications side by side.

Parallels offers a 14 day trial. To download the trial version, click here

Parallels Coherence View mode

Coherence is a view mode that allows you to run Windows applications on your Mac, as though they were native Mac applications. In Coherence mode, you can use both your Windows and Mac applications at the same time without managing two separate desktops or rebooting. You can even load Windows applications directly from your Mac Dock or Mac desktop. In this mode, all Parallels Desktop controls, icons, and menus are hidden, except for the Parallels icon in the Mac menu bar and the Windows Applications folder in the Dock. To know more about this feature, please refer this article.

Parallels Suspending Windows

By default, when you quit Parallels Desktop, Windows is suspended, and the next time you open Parallels Desktop Windows resumes exactly from where you left off.

If more than one person uses Windows on your Mac, then a user can access the account in Windows suspended by the previous user. To avoid this, you can disable automatically suspending Parallels Desktop.

To disable automatically suspending Parallels Desktop:

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Option-click (Alt-click) the Parallels icon  in the menu bar and choose Preferences, and then click General.
    • If the Parallels Desktop menu bar is visible at the top of the screen, choose Parallels Desktop > Preferences, and then click General.
  2. Select OS X Resume: Disable for Parallels Desktop.

Once automatically suspending Windows is disabled, each time you quit Parallels Desktop you can specify how you want Windows to shut down. And if you close the Parallels Desktop window, Windows shuts down according to how it’s set in shutdown settings. To ensure that another user can’t access your Windows account, set Windows to shut down or stop (rather than suspend).

Windows 10 Trial

Microsoft offers a Windows 10 trial for 90 days. You can take this opportunity to try Tourwriter on your Mac through both the Parallels and Windows trial versions. You need to register at Microsoft to download Windows 10.

Display settings for Mac users.

As a Mac user, you may see the right vertical scroll bar on the Bookings tab disappear. This happens when your Windows screen resolution reverts to match the resolution on your Mac screen. The Windows Display setting locks a custom scaling size that cannot be changed.

Solution: Disable the Dynamic Resolution feature on your Virtual Machine configuration.
1. Ensure you turn off your Virtual Machine.
2. Switch to your Parallels desktop.
3. Head to your virtual machine’s Configuration > Options tab > Full Screen
4. From the Scale to fit screen drop-down list select Keep Ratio.

5. Now turn on the Virtual Machine to start your Windows operating system and head to Windows Display Settings
6. Under Scale and layout, you’d see the following message “A custom scale factor is set“. Select the option Turn off custom scaling and sign out

7. After you sign back in, change the Scale and layout size to the (Recommended) size
8. Restart Tourwriter.

To learn more on how to change custom screen resolution in Full Screen mode on your Parallels Virtual Machine, click here.

Tourwriter is a Windows application and requires Windows 7 or higher operating system with the free Microsoft .NET 4 (or higher) installed.

Hardware requirements:

  • Memory: 4Gb of RAM and above will suffice. 8GB and above is recommended for optimal performance.
  • Storage: Tourwriter requires only 50-70Mb for installation. Images, report files, booking email templates and copies of sent emails linked to your Tourwriter app are stored by hosting the MSB network drive. The space to host MSB is not consumed off your device storage.
  • Speed: No minimum requirement. Any new PC with good speed will do. The higher the speed, the better the performance will be.

Tourwriter works fine on the latest version of Windows OS, Windows 11.

Installing Tourwriter on a Mac requires virtual machines like Parallels, which lets you run Windows inside your Mac. There are no major problems with it as long as the Mac is not too old. For instructions on using Tourwriter on a Mac, read Tourwriter for Mac users.

If you have a new Mac with an M1 chip, you’d need to use Tourwriter on Parallels 16.5.

Tourwriter for Mac Users https://kb.tourwriter.com/tourwriter-for-mac Fri, 18 Sep 2015 05:30:51 +0000 http://kb.tourwriter.com/?p=419 Tourwriter is written using .Net and given this it is dependent on the Windows operating system to operate. We therefore recommend that Mac users who want to run Tourwriter on their Macs, purchase Parallels (most of our clients who have a Mac use Tourwriter in conjunction with Parallels), enabling you to run Windows and the Apple iOs at the same time.

Tourwriter is written using .Net and therefore is dependent on the Windows operating system to operate. Installing Tourwriter on a Mac requires virtual machines like Parallels or Oracle VirtualBox which lets you run Windows inside your Mac.

Tourwriter on Mac Through Parallels

We recommend that users who want to run Tourwriter on their Mac, purchase Parallels, enabling you to run Windows and the Apple iOs at the same time. Parallels is a very “efficient system” which means that it does not use up too much RAM (4GB is recommended for it to work well). You will also need to install Windows on top of Parallels. Parallels is a paid virtual machine option which is very popular among our numerous Tourwriter users on Macs. The cost of a Windows license is additional.

In the below video, Nick explains how Tourwriter works in a Mac environment.

We have no plans to create a system using the Apple iOS, as most Apple users are happy with using Tourwriter in conjunction with Parallels. If you’d like us to put you in touch with some Apple Mac users who are using Tourwriter, please let us know.

Tourwriter on Mac Through Oracle Virtual Box

You can try Oracle VirtualBox (an alternative option to Parallels). Virtual Box is a free virtual machine option that some Tourwriter clients have been using with success and Windows also offer a free 90 day trial to allow you to evaluate their system.
The entire steps are given below for your reference:
  • Download and install Oracle VirtualBox for OS X into your Mac
  • Install Windows 7 or higher into VirtualBox (This YouTube video will give you step by step instructions to setup Windows)
  • Download and install Tourwriter. See this article for complete installation steps.
